On Shopify, the evidence is what merchants wrote
The App Store carries full review text, so an app can be judged on what real stores said after running it — and on how that changed over time. A 4.8 built on 40 reviews in 2019 is not the same app as a 4.8 built on 4,000 reviews this year, and only the history shows it.

WordPress.org publishes no review text at all — only a 1-5 star histogram. What it does publish is far more useful for a self-hosted store: when the plugin last shipped, which WordPress it was tested against, and whether the support forum gets answered. Those are the things that break a live checkout.
